Birmingham Film Studio - Sustainability Policy

At Birmingham Film Studio, we are passionate about journeying to practice and pursue sustainability in our studio space so that we can protect our environment and steward our space ethically and sustainably. We are always looking for new ways to improve our current efforts to be sustainable to play our part in being a fully sustainable studio.

Here are some of the ways in which we are currently sustainable at the Birmingham Film Studio:

  • Reducing Single-Use Plastic

A lot of single-use plastic ends up in our oceans, and by 2050, there will be more plastic in our ocean than fish. Therefore, we have a policy of no single use plastic in our studio. Instead, we provide our clients with re-usable bottles, and we encourage clients and staff to bring their own re-usable bottles.

  • Building Efficiency

LED lighting uses at least 75% less energy and lasts up to 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. Our whole building and studio space, including our loading bay, uses LED lighting ensuring it’s energy efficient. The majority of our hire lighting stock are all LED also which provide energy efficiency.

Our air conditioning uses air source heat pumps making it energy efficient. Typically, an example of how much energy this saves is that for every 1kWh of electricity, an air source heat pump can produce 3kWh of heat.

According to the National Institute of Hygiene, rubbing hands with hot air dryers to hasten drying would only lead to greater bacterial numbers and airborne dissemination. Therefore, we opted not to install hand dryers in our toilet to reduce energy use and ensure hygiene levels for our clients and staff. We instead provide fresh and clean re-usable hand towels.

We have heavily invested in Mannok’s Quin Therm PIR boards insulation throughout our building and studio to reduce our heating and energy consumption. The entire range of Mannok PIR insulation boards has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and an A+ green guide rating, making them not just energy-efficient, but a product that provides excellent thermal performance and improves the overall sustainability of the building.

  • Appliances

Refurbished products lower the strain on the environment for raw materials. Therefore, most of our appliances are refurbished, including our coffee machine.

  • Set or Props

The less we consume, the less damage we will do to the environment. Any set that is built by the studio will be re-used to limit waste and to lessen consumption of buying new goods. We aim to ensure most of our props or set pieces are purchased second-hand where possible.

  • Recycling

Birmingham Council do not provide recycling on our unit. Therefore, to tackle this issue at Birmingham Film Studio, we provide a recycling bin in our kitchen which our staff take home to recycle in the local areas.

  • Plant Hire

Since electric forklifts don't produce carbon monoxide and run quietly, we have ensured our scissor lift and forklift are powered by electric instead of diesel. Diesel forklifts produce fumes and loud noises that are hazards to workers in enclosed spaces.

We are aware these are only a few ways we are playing our part in sustainability and protecting our planet. But we are passionate about journeying with this pressing issue we all face to continue making changes towards the goal of sustainability and helping our environment. Each year we review and add to our policies to ensure we’re doing very best for the longevity of our film studio.

If you’d like to talk to our team about any of these policies, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us through our website: www.birminghamfilmstudio.com
